Leon Alaric Shafer (1866-1940) was a painter, etcher and illustrator who exhibited his works in 1897 and 1905 at the Art Institute of Chicago. His body of work includes cover designs for the American Legion monthly and the Literary Digest as well as posters for the Great War. This poster is one of several issued by the United States government as part of their liberty bonds campaign between 1917 and 1919 to raise money for its involvement in World War I. Shafer skillfully captures a tense moment at sea in this exciting stone litho image, depicting a German U Boat confronted by an American destroyer escorting a troop transport ship.
