This well-done science fiction hit is interestingly told from the point of view of a twelve year-old boy. Jimmy Hunt and his father Leif Erickson find an alien space craft has landed near their home. When the boy's father comes back from investigating, David realizes that Martians have taken over his mind, and also other of the town's people, and it is up to him to warn others. As unsettling as any science fiction film can be, this tale is told through the eyes of young David MacLean (Jimmy Hunt) as he watches his parents and all the grownups in town fall under the control of invading space aliens. A perfect paranoia-inducing vehicle, the picture skillfully leveraged the Cold War atmosphere of the day, providing a metaphor for the fear of Communist infiltration into the United States. Although filmed on a tight budget, director William Cameron Menzies expertly crafted an exceptionally memorable film.
